Is it legal to own venemous snakes in north america?

i am intrested in keeping certain south american pit vipers as a hobby. i find them beautiful and interesting. some examples are the eyelash pit viper and the specaled pit viper. i know you need permits to own venemous snakes but are certain ones illegal? where is the best site to go to find out laws and what i can and can not keep?
