How can I get better at understanding patients with disablities and speech impairments?

I just got a new job at a facility for people with cerebral palsy, muscle dystrophy, etc. Most of the patients are non-verbal and the rest have speech impairments. I am having a really hard time trying to understand what they are trying to communicate to me. Does anyone have any advice that will help me understand them better?
